Abi Burlingham

Hello & Welcome

I am a writer, mostly of children's books, but I also write poems and recently finished co-writing an adult contemporary novel called 'The Story Maker'. You can read the first 9 chapters here via the Harper Collins' site, 'Authonomy', once you have registered as a reader on the site. You can also read my blog posts via the Blog tab above. In the spaces between writing, I teach English to adults, paint (see Arty Stuff tab above), work as a freelance editor (see Editing tab above) and visit schools, libraries, writing groups and whoever else wants me, doing readings, talks, workshops and other fun stuff. You can view my Author Visit sheet here and go into the Workshops/School Visits tab for more details. My details are also available via Contact an Author here.

Buttercup Magic: A Mystery for Megan

A Mystery for Megan has now been released as an audio book by the BBC's Audio Go, narrated by actress Clare Corbett, and is available from Amazon here.

Grub's Pups

Grub's Pups has been awarded the Bizziebaby Gold Award for 2011/12, which is fab! You can see details of this here.

Grub in Love

Grub in Love is available as part of an amazing Book People Package: The Animal Stories Bedtime Collection, a Picadilly Ten Picture Book Set. Grub in Love now also has a co-edition in Slovenia, called 'Paco se zaljubi,' which is just a little bit fab!

Derbyshire Literature Festival

I was lucky enough to be involved in the Derbyshire Literature Festival in May 2012. I did four events across the county. You can see some pics here.

The Ruby and Grub series

A series of three books, aimed at 2-6 year olds, about a little girl, Ruby, and her mischievous (but very cute and loveable) dog, Grub (that's Grub on the front cover there.) 'Ruby and Grub' is the first in the series, published by Piccadilly Press in February 2010, with lots of gorgeous piccies by Sarah Warburton. I was (and still am) delighted when I got the deal for 'Ruby and Grub' and amazed that at last the story had worked its way from my tatty scraps of paper in a variety of notepads to become immortalised in full colour. That an idea in my head can become something so tactile and beautiful continues to be a thing of amazement to me. The second book in the series, 'Grub in Love', was published in February 2011, and introduced two new characters, Billy and his dog, Tilly.

Grub's Pups

Published, October 2011

In Grub's Pups, Grub becomes a dad and isn't taking his responsibilities very seriously. The book is littered ('scuse the pun) with lots of very cute puppies, as you may have guessed by the cover, and a terrific amount of excitement!

In addition, Ruby and Grub are becoming fairly well-travelled. Both 'Ruby and Grub' and 'Grub in Love' have co-editions in Australia and The Netherlands, and 'Grub in Love' and 'Grub's Pups' now have Slovenian co-editions.

A Mystery for Megan

Published April 2012

I am delighted (I spend a lot of my time being delighted) to say that 'A Mystery for Megan', aimed at 6-9 year olds, is now available. I wrote the first draft for this in three weeks following a very vivid dream. My lovely publisher, Piccadilly Press, liked it straight away! It's had many re-writes and plot tweaks since, and has finally come together. 'A Mystery for Megan' features Megan and Freya, who become best friends when Megan moves next door to Freya and into Buttercup House. All sorts of mysteries begin to reveal themselves as the girls become involved with a group of animals - some very clever mice, a talking cat called Dorothy and a beautiful golden dog called Buttercup.
